DIY Tips for Wood Flooring Installation

Many of our clients based in Kent City, MI have asked us how hard it is to perform wood flooring installation, if you would like to know too, then continue reading this post.

The most important tip when it comes to installing DIY wooden flooring is prepping a space and choosing the best materials. First and foremost, the room where you want to install the flooring must be cleared of all furniture and other furnishings. Any baseboards or runners will often need to be removed also. However, before you do this, it is important that you first choose the best materials for the space.

Hardwood flooring is quite difficult to install, however, there are a few kits available to make the process easier. Choosing the right materials and the best installation method before beginning is key. Also, you need to consider what kind of subfloor you have, as this will greatly impact on what flooring can be installed. For example, plywood subfloors are good when it comes to installing hardwood, and concrete can be used as a subfloor, so long as it is level and is not below the level of the ground outside your home.

However, if it is, moisture will often seep in and damage your wooden flooring quickly. So we advise installing some sort of waterproof sheeting between either the concrete or plywood and the hardwood flooring. When it comes time to cut the floorboards, it is advisable to use either a table or miter saw.

Crosscutting a board will need a circular saw; and if possible, use a guide of some sort when using a circular saw to make sure the cut is straight. A carbide tip blade is highly recommended for such cutting. The biggest tip you need to remember is to make sure all cuts are straight; measure twice before doing any cuts.
